A Weekend to Relive the Arcade Days

Remember when you would spend an entire day at the arcade with a few good friends? For those of us who had such a youth, California Extreme has been a reunion with our childhood. The weekend event was another chance to replay the arcade games that defined our youth while introducing us to gems we may have missed.

California Extreme 2026 brought together retro gamers and arcade fans for a nostalgic weekend. Guests could enjoy their favorite games and purchase any of the arcade cabinets on the floor that were for sale. For me and my friends, it was all about spending the weekend playing arcade games like in the good old days.

An Arcade of Nostalgia

My weekend at California Extreme 2026 was all about reconnecting with some of my favorite arcade games. It was a chance to play some classics that launched successful franchises or paved the way for others to follow. Thus, it makes sense to talk about the arcade games I got to play during the weekend.

Silent Scope has been one of my favorite arcade series, while the third entry has been a regular at California Extreme. Of couse, Silent Scope EX was back for another weekend and I just had to play it. Since I’ve been playing this series for a long time and regularly during the event, I was a natural pro. I was once again able to complete the entire game with ease.

I was excited to see Crazy Taxi was back again at California Extreme. This is a title I played at various arcades and on the PlayStation 2 back in the day, and I got to replay it for the first time last year. However, the game was so popular that a massive crowd was always gathered around it. I got lucky later in the day, but by the time it was my turn, another crowd had formed. I once again chose Axel for my playthrough, which began with a stop at the cable car station, followed by a drop-off at Tower Records. From there, I made a quick delivery to KFC and ended with a final drop-off at the church just before my time ran out.

A cornerstone of my arcade experience, Area 51 was back and I had to replay it. Stepping into the role of a Special Tactical Advanced Alien Response (S.T.A.A.R.) operative, I was tasked with stopping an alien takeover of the iconic facility. I jumped into the action from the start, blasting my way through waves of aliens. Halfway through, another player joined me, and together we fought through relentless waves of enemies and pushed forward until we destroyed the mothership in the game’s climactic finale.

What do you get when you combine the gameplay of Crazy Taxi with a paramedic? The answer is Emergency Call Ambulance. Players are put behind the wheel of an ambulance and must race to the hospital before the patient flatlines. Besides racing against the clock, players must also be cautious of the road, as crashes and impacts will harm the patient and cut precious seconds from the timer. Basically, it is Crazy Taxi with an ambulance, except everyone else is driving like crazy.

It has been a long time since I played the Atari Star Wars game at California Extreme, as playing it used to be a tradition for me. This is one of the most iconic arcade cabinets and the first Star Wars game. It is a rail shooter that has players relive the Battle of Yavin, better known as the attack on the Death Star. Once again, I fought waves of TIE Fighters before navigating the trenches to deliver the final blow while fighting Darth Vader.

California Extreme has always been an opportunity to relive my childhood, and the 2026 event was no different. It is a lesson on the history of video games and a chance to play titles I missed out on. That’s why it’s the perfect weekend for gamers of all generations to gather and have fun, whether they were raised in arcades or are fascinated by gaming history.
