Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller that follows the story of Mima Kirigoe, the lead singer of the fictional J-pop group who decides to an actress. However the change in career begins to take a toll on her mental state while she is also being harassed by an obsessed fan. The film was released back in 1998 and has been highly praised by critics while today is hailed as one of the best anime films.
In 2000, Darren Aronofsky purchased the American rights to Perfect Blue and would use it as the inspiration for several iconic moments in Requiem for a Dream. It would also be the inspiration for Black Swan, which was nominated for five Academy Awards and won one (Natalie Portman for Best Actress).
What wonderful news, this is my favorite Satoshi Kon movie ever!
