A Weekend of Finding The Answer

The Fourth of July weekend was packed with a variety of conventions that used the holiday’s free time to bring communities together. One of those events was BayCon 42, a science fiction convention organized by the Society for the Promotion of Speculative Fiction. It is one of the longest running conventions in the Bay Area, uniting the science fiction fandom and community for a weekend of fun. This year’s event was also organized in partnership with Westercon.

BayCon 42 / Westercon 78 took place from July 3 to July 6 at the Santa Clara Marriott. The event invited the many science fiction and fantasy fandom communities in the Bay Area and the West Coast for a festive weekend. These are the highlights of some of the things I saw during my time at the event.

Marketplace

The Marketplace is where guests can find vendors selling their works, art, and other merchandise. Located in Salon 4-5 along with the outside halls, it hosted a variety of merchants throughout the weekend. Beyond vendors, a number of fan clubs and organizations were also present to connect with the community. Even without a shopping agenda, it is still fun to browse the offerings and meet the many artists and authors.

Davenriche European Martial Artes School offers classes in a variety of European martial arts using classical weapons such as the longsword. They also offer classes in science fiction weapons like lightsabers from Star Wars. During the event, they were present to highlight their class offerings and encourage guests to sign up with special offers.

Next Stop – Everywhere Travel is a travel agency that specializes in booking and accommodations for convention travel. With the support of Travel Advisor Emily Gray, clients get the best deals on hotels at rates better than those offered through the convention block. This makes it the perfect service for those who travel to conventions regularly.

Blue Rondo Games is an independent publisher best known for the card game Crabs in a Bucket. The team was present during BayCon to showcase the game while also hosting classes in the Game Room on how to play it.

HeartBeasts is a new TTRPG in development by Floppy Cat Games LLC. It is a game that takes players on an adventure inspired by Pokémon and Shin Megami Tensei. Players embark on a journey in a world populated with monsters that can be captured and used for battle while also building bonds with them. How the game plays depends on your character build and skills.

Fan Clubs and Events

The Royal Manticoran Navy is the official fan club of the Honorverse and Honor Harrington from the works of David Weber. The club was present to introduce guests to the series and their community while also reaching out to fans of the series who want to join. Here, guests could learn about the many chapters on the West Coast along with the work the organization does for the community.

Loscon is the longest running science fiction and fantasy convention in Los Angeles with the 2026 event set to take place from November 27th to November 29th. The staff was present during the weekend to promote the event, especially among Bay Area attendees who will be in the LA area for the holiday season.

Things to Do at BayCon

The Anime Room was a screening room that presented a variety of anime titles during the weekend. This included classic films like The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? to modern works like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Guests were invited to pop in at any time to enjoy what was playing and mingle with other like minded viewers.  

Artemis: Spaceship Bridge Simulator is a PC game that launched in 2010 and has been highly praised for how it puts players in the role of having to work together to operate a starship. The Bay Area Artemis Training Fleet is a community of fans who have set up two bridges with a total of 12 stations with the opportunity to have guests participate in a game during the weekend. They have also organized panels that introduced new players to the game in preparation for an open mission.

Organized by the Heinlein Society, a Blood Drive was held on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. Guests were invited to sign up and donate blood.

While not organized by the BayCon, there were random moments in which guests would gather for a game of Pokémon Go. With several gyms around the area, there were moments when guests would gather to participate in raids. Others would take a break and catch any Pokémon within range.

BayCon Panels

BayCon 42 / Westercon 78 organized a series of insightful panels covering a variety of topics, from self-publishing to discussions centered on the convention theme, The Answer. These are some of the panels I got to check out during the event.

I Cried at an Anime (again), and I Regret Nothing! examined titles that make viewers feel emotionally uncomfortable or vulnerable. Anime has a long history as a medium that taps into the emotions of its audience. The panel explored works that accomplish this and the lasting impact they have had on the presenter. It also offered an inside look at some of the first anime clubs that emerged in the Bay Area and how members managed to meet despite limited access and resources.

What is Fascism? explores the history of the political movement before and after World War II and its depiction in Science fiction.

Representation in Media (a different approach) was a look at diversity in media along with ways to avoid relying on harmful stereotypes. The panel featured Samantha Chong, Dr. Heidi Stauffer, Valerie Frankel, Bradford Lyau, and Sandra Saidak.

He Who Critiques Monsters examined how to critique media in today’s landscape. Guests were invited to hear and share their thoughts on media criticism without bad faith takes or feeding into polarization. It also addressed the need to challenge works that support our ideas but fall short in quality while failing to challenge their audience.

Cosplayers of BayCon

While not a major aspect of the event, there were a good number of cosplayers present during the weekend. Those present had worked hard to bring their favorite character to life. A few even added their personal touch to it.
