What to Expect in August 2023

With the Summer Season still on-going, Viz Media has announced a list of major releases for the month of August 2023. This includes new manga series by major writers and artists, the return of beloved stories, along with major DVD launches. 

All works can be purchased through Viz Media or authorized vendors. Here is a breakdown of all the major releases from Viz Media during the month of August. 

Series Debut

Akane-banashi, Vol. 1 begins when Akane stirs up a scandal when she’s discovered taking informal lessons from her father’s former teacher, Shiguma Arakawa. At the same time, she’s about to make big waves because she is about to begin her first steps in climbing the ranks of a rakugo performer. Making things more complicated is that she still needs to finish high school and navigate her relationship with Shiguma’s apprentice.

Heart Gear, Vol. 1 begins when Roue accidentally activates Chrome without a base program, a robot’s soul. She and Uncle Zett invite him into their family and encourage him to choose his own purpose.

Anime Tie-Ins

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Vol. 17 has the titular hero preparing to unleash his full power against Code. However, the stress on his body may be more than he can take. At the same time, Naruto heads to the battlefield to rescue his son.

 Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, Vol. 11 follows Akira and company on a massive 1,300-kilometer pilgrimage. Just as they’re getting used to the austere life, Beatrix is captured by a group of criminals. Later, the gang is welcomed aboard a luxury cruise ship docked in the Seto Inland Sea. This results in some unexpected fun.  

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part 5–Golden Wind, Vol. 9 begins with Giorno Giovanna and the crew in the presence of the Boss. Making matters worse is his Stand ability appears to be invincible. 

New Releases

Ayashimon, Vol. 3 focuses on Maruo and Urara after they have convinced the Todoroki Alliance to join them. However, the situation becomes complicated when the Enma Syndicate declares open season on every other gang in Kabukicho. 

Sakamoto Days, Vol. 9 begins with Sakamoto running to Shin’s aid and clashing violently with Shinaya (who’s being controlled by Gaku). At the same time, they work to gain information on X, who continues to operate in the shadows.

Choujin X, Vol. 3 has Tokio and Ely working hard to become choujin protectors. Meanwhile, Azuma is languishing as a normal student in a regular school. 

Art Book

The Art of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Anime is a collection of the incredible designs and thrilling animation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Featured are a variety of art, illustrations, and production material from the show. The book includes over 300 illustrations primarily created for the Tanjiro Kamado Unwavering Resolve arc.
