Relentlessly, Without Looking Back

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is one of several games that I stumbled upon when I was at Anime Expo 2019. Even though I didn’t get the chance to play it, the trailer left a lasting impression that made me want to play it the next chance I got.

Like so many titles published by NIS America, I know exactly what to expect form the experience. Trails of Cold Steel III is no exception as its an anime inspired and story driven JRPG. This third entry features several improvements from its predecessor while maintaining what has made the arch a memorable entry into the series.

What Kind of Future you Want

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III takes place one year after the events of the previous game with the Civil War having come to an end and the Erebonian Empire having grown to become the Super Power of the continent. Players will once again take on the role of Rean Schwarzer, who has become a professor at the Thors Military Academy.

During this time, Schwarzer will be educating a new generation of military leaders while working alongside his comrades from past games. However all is not subtle as the sinister Ouroboros is plotting something sinister while another conflict looms on the horizon.

For fans of either the genre or series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III has a classic JRPG setup that can easily be recognized. The game has striked a solid balance between story telling and engaging action. The combat system has been modified to allow players to use a verity of attack options based on their situation or preferred style. Thankfully this new combat system is easy to understand.

Even though its the genre staples that make Trails of Cold Steel III, it also holds it back sometimes. Even though its trying to go for that anime look, the visual details are not taking advantage of the PlayStation 4 (or the Pro) and thus are not that appealing. Also I have to note that the musical score has the tune of elevator music (some may feel differently and other might agree).

Despite these minor shortcomings, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is another excellent entry into the iconic series. It has the classic JRPG setup along with some minor changes along with the return of your favorite character from past games.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III not only continues the journey of Rean Schwarzer but also that of the iconic series.
