Red Barrels decided to offer a treat to horror fans this month by allowing them to tryout the Outlast II demo. Now horror buffs get to sample the demo that has frighted gamers at PAX East, E3, and Gamescom.

Players take on the role of Blake Langermann, an investigative journalists working with his wife trying to uncover mysterious murder of a pregnant woman only known as Jane Doe. During their investigation, they crash near the Sonoran Desert and are separated. Using only a camera with limited battery life, Blake must find Lynn and uncover the mystery of what is going on.

The demo begins with Blake regaining consciousness on the outskirts of a derelict farm and getting his camera ready. Upon exploring the farm, I find a slaughtered animal along with some shrine. Something is obviously not right because as I’m haunted by this feeling that something is watching me.

As I continue to explore the area, I stumble onto a mysterious temple along with a disturbing pit. Blake is summoned to a well were he is dragged by a tongue and now I’m in a ventilation system. After fining an exit, for some reason I’m now at some school that is haunted by a sinister presence.

I’m not gonna give too much away about the demo but I would recommend playing it.

While the experience was frightening, I can’t shake the feeling that the demo also felt like it was trying really hard to be like Silent Hills and Resident Evil 7. The demo starts at a farm that is very similar to the Baker Family farm while walking around the school is very similar to the hallway from PT.

I’m not saying that Outlast II is a clone, maybe the demo was design this way as a tribute to PT and Beginning Hour. Regardless I did have a frighting time playing this demo and will definitely get the full game when it comes out.

Outlast II demo is available for the PS4, Xbox One and PC but horror fans have until November 1st to download it. The game is set to be released sometime in early 2017.
