Welcome to Serpentcoil Island

As the year comes to an end, there is still room for unique games to come onto the scene. Some are familiar titles while others will offer a unique experience. One such title that I got to recently play is the PC version of  Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. A JRPG with roguelike elements but also offering a relaxing experience.

For fans of this long-running series, it’s another adventure with Shiren and Koppa. New gamers will take a liking right away to our beloved heroes with Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. It presents a unique experience that tests your skills in a comfortable setting.

A New Mystery Dungeon

Set after the events of Monster of Moonlight Village, Shiren and Koppa have come to Serpentcoil Island. They have been drawn by the promise of treasure and a dream with a mysterious girl asking for their help. Complicating matters is the treasure is protected by a monster. Together they must battle across the island’s many dungeons and grow strong if they wish to save the mysterious girl. However, the first attempt does not go according to plan resulting in Shiren having lost his memory and in a weakened state. Players must battle their way across the island’s many dungeons in an attempt to reach the top and defeat the monster once and for all. Along the way, they will meet new friends and fearsome foes.

This is my first time playing a game in the Shiren the Wanderer series, so I had no prior knowledge of the previous titles or overarching lore. Despite that, I found the game easy to follow and understand, making it welcoming for newcomers. While the story isn’t particularly deep or thought-provoking, it delivers exactly what I’d expect from this type of game—and I mean that as a compliment. It sets the tone perfectly and introduces the characters and world effectively.

The Way of Gitau

This is not just my first time playing a Shiren the Wanderer series game but also my first Mystery Dungeon game. So you could tell part of the gameplay was a complete surprise to me the first time around.

The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island combat is based on a grid but the actions and movements sort of happen in real time. You can move freely but it will also trigger an opponent or friend to also move at the same time. The same principle applies to attacks when fighting. Players could battle monsters with their fists or with whatever weapon they could find. After each battle, you will be rewarded and gain Exp that will boost your level. Foes are not your only concern as you will also need to watch your stamina or risk getting knocked out.

A key feature of the game is its roguelike elements, where no two dungeon layouts are ever the same. If you die in the first dungeon, you’ll return to a completely new configuration. This randomness also applies to the number of enemies and the items you can discover. This dynamic design makes the game both fun and challenging, forcing you to rely on skill and adaptability rather than prior progress or accumulated advantages.

Grab Your Gear

The first thing that caught my attention in The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island was its cozy atmosphere, which felt unusual for a roguelike. While the game had its intense moments, I rarely felt stressed, making the experience surprisingly relaxing. Its calming visual design and soothing musical soundtrack worked harmoniously to create an inviting and tranquil mood. This unique combination made exploring the dungeon as enjoyable as it was refreshing.

While the game is fun and relaxing, it has issues that can frustrate players. The most prominent problem is the unbalanced item distribution, where basic items like swords rarely appear compared to shields or arrows. This imbalance often works against players, making progression unnecessarily difficult. Additionally, the game poorly explains its mechanics, assuming players are already familiar with the series. As a first-time Shiren the Wanderer player, I had to rely on guesswork during my initial attempts.

A Wish Granted

Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island offers a relaxing yet challenging quest. Players explore diverse dungeons, battle monsters, and uncover treasures in a fun-filled adventure. Although the series has a long history, this entry is highly accessible, making it a great starting point for newcomers.
