Fate Calls on its Heroes

It has been a good year for fighting gamers. They have seen the return of beloved classics along with crossovers, works grounded in reality, and unique twists on the genre. The year may be coming to an end but the genre has one more heavy-hitter to offer in the form of Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a fighting game spin-off of the hit game while also acting as a follow-up to Versus. Players will take on the role of one of the many beloved characters from the series and battle it out in an arena. There will also be a variety of mini-games along with special unlockables.

Rise to the Top

At the core, it enables players to embody one of the 24 characters hailing from the Granblue Fantasy series. Each character possesses distinct strengths and weaknesses tailored to various fighting styles. Like any other fighting game, certain characters will instantly capture your affinity. Despite the plethora of choices, it’s worthwhile to venture beyond your comfort zone. Revel in the enjoyment of discovering each character’s nuances while simultaneously honing your skills. Of course; this is easier said than done!

Versus: Rising has both an offline and online mode. Offline; players will have access to the Arcade, Versus, and Story Mode. Arcade Mode allows players to battle a series of opponents to reach a final boss. Those who want to practice their skills or play with a friend will take a liking to Versus Mode. Story Mode offers a unique experience in the form of a beat’em up set in the world of Granblue Fantasy. Story Mode is fun for those who miss the genre while Versus is a great experience when playing with a friend.

The online feature enables players to connect with opponents globally, taking into account both geographical location and individual skill sets. This inclusivity is particularly beneficial for novice fighters, as it allows them to engage with others possessing a comparable skill level, mitigating the intimidation factor of facing more experienced players. All the defining elements of Versus Mode are preserved, but with an expanded pool of players. Moreover, locating a match is effortlessly achieved thanks to the vibrant activity community.

Finally, one cannot overlook the Rupie Store, where players can acquire a diverse array of cosmetics. The offerings range from character colors and weapon skins to avatars and character figures. With such a wealth of options, devoted players can effortlessly tailor their character profile to authentically mirror their style. Earning the rupies needed is possible by winning matches and completing daily challenges.

Destruction and Rebirth

Fighting gamers and fans of the series will take a liking to Versus: Rising. However, it has a minor issue that seems to plague a lot of fighting games. That is having an unengaging story.

Don’t get me wrong, the Story Mode was fun to play since it felt more like a beat’em up. It’s just the story itself was not that intresting. This is a common issue when fighting games attempt to add a plot or story. It’s admirable that they want to add substance, however it’s usually unnecessary. Versus: Rising is no exception even though it has enough lore as a source of inspiration. After all, it’s hard to want to be focused on a plot the gameplay is about fighting an opponent in an arena.

But given how little significant the story is to a fighting game, this is one of those issues one can easily overlook.

Bringing Back the Angels

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a solid fighting game that fans of the series can appreciate and genre regulars can get into. From its diverse roster of familiar characters to the variety in gameplay, it’s a game anyone can easily pick up and enjoy.
