An Insight for Bay Area Gamers
With its ultra violence and crude humor, BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is a homage to an era when gaming was beginning to mature.
With its ultra violence and wicked sense of humor, BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre knows its audience very well. This is not some edgy wannabe title but a homage to an era when gaming was beginning to mature.
This the ideal title if you grew up watching Jackass and playing Postal 2 back in the days. Had this game been released in the late 90’s / early 2000’s, you know that anti-video game moralists would have had a panic attack. Thankfully we now live a more progressive time with the only video game controversy involves predatory monetization practices and exploitative gambling mechanics.
I bring up this history lesson because BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre context is a tribute to this era. It does this well by adding a lot of bloody violence while finding a balance between being crude but tasteful.
Note: This review is based on playing with the “Adults Only” DLC.
BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is set in Hell many years after it was “liberated” by by mega-corporations. Players take on the role of Lou, the alcoholic son of Satan, who wages a one demon war to liberate his home. He has to restore his family honor and rescue the hottest demoness.
Let me start with the obvious; you are going to love its crude humor and jabs at pop-culture. Expect a lot of sexual jokes and jabs at pop-culture that might distract you from the army of demons. That being said, I also respect how it strikes a balance of being funny but not unnecessarily offensive (to the common person). Complementing the humor is the amount of bloody carnage one can create.
One aspect that many should take the time to appreciate are the detailed rich environment. The world is full of hellish imagery mixed with hidden jokes and jabs at our own world. However you will need to take time to admire it or it will fly pass you.
BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is an easy to learn isometric shooter with RPG elements. gameplay mechanics. Players blast waves of demon while also upgrading their weapons and abilities. The player will also have to make some choices that will have profound results ( like a little nod to Far Cry 4). There will also be mini-games that will allow you to boost your character or earn more cash to buy stuff.
The only real issue I had with the game is there are too many bugs and glitches. A month after its release, I’m still encountering these problems. There glitches that hinder the experience (especially after loading a new stage) or bugs that crash the game. These glitches are somewhat tolerable but it would have been better if they were resolved before launch.
The best way I could describe BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre, it’s a game for gamers. Just not any gamer, ones who grew up at the turn of the century. If you enjoyed the context of Grand Theft Auto III or Postal 2 then you will enjoy this gem.
With its ultra violence and crude humor, BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is a homage to an era when gaming was beginning to mature.
