During GDC 2025, I had the opportunity to preview System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster with the Nightdive Studios team.

During the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Nightdive Studios announced the launch date of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. At the same time, members of the press were invited for a special session of the game. I was fortunate to be among those who had the chance to play the highly anticipated remaster of one of the greatest PC games of all time.
During a special session at GDC 2025, I had the opportunity to preview System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster with Larry Kuperman and Steven Kick of Nightdive Studios. This session offered a hands-on experience with the enhanced edition of a legendary game while providing an early look at its many updates.
Here is a quick recap of the story for those who never played System Shock 2.
It is a direct sequel to the acclaimed cyber-horror game System Shock, introducing new RPG and survival mechanics. Set 42 years after the original, players take on the role of a soldier aboard the Von Braun, an FTL starship on its maiden voyage. After awakening from deep-space hibernation with no memory of recent events, they soon discover the ship has been overrun by a parasitic bioweapon known as the Many, which originated from S.H.O.D.A.N.’s genetic experiments in the first game. Players must navigate the chaos, locate survivors, and eradicate the infestation.
It had been a long time since I last played System Shock 2, so while I had a good idea of what to expect, I also approached it with a fresh perspective. The preview session was played on the PC version using a mouse and keyboard—just like in the old days.
The session began at the very start, providing a recap of the previous game’s events and how much the world has changed. The game opens with my recruitment into the Unified National Nominate, where I choose my branch of service, training, and role. After this setup, I awakened aboard the Von Braun with no memory of what happened. Dr. Janice Polito quickly instructs me to escape the area before it decompresses. Once in a safe zone, I begin exploring, soon encountering crew members who have been infected by the Many. I attempt to use whatever weapons I can find while also using the skills I’ve learned. The session ended with my demise at the hands of a swarm of infected, as I had run out of health items.
My overall impression is that this remaster breathes new life into a classic while preserving its defining aspects. Visually, the world is more detailed and crisper while still maintaining its ’90s aesthetics. The gameplay remains as fans remember it—you’ll need to explore every corner of the Von Braun, relying on your wits or an online strategy guide for help. Longtime fans will enjoy revisiting this classic, while a new generation will finally experience the game that paved the way for titles like Deus Ex and BioShock.
Speaking with Larry Kuperman and Steven Kick, they shared some of the biggest challenges in remastering System Shock 2. The most significant obstacle was the need to reverse-engineer the entire game due to the loss of the original source code. Further complicating the process was the complexity of working with the Dark Engine. At the same time, the team has been developing the game for its first-ever console release.
Despite its lengthy development, the project has yielded results that benefited other games. Most notably, work on the remaster contributed to the development of the System Shock remake. Lessons learned from bringing the remaster to consoles also informed the development of the console version of System Shock.
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is set to launch on June 26th, 2025. It will be available for the PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, along with the PC. The PC version will be available through Steam and GOG. A remake of the first game was released for the PC in 2023, followed by a console launch in 2024.
