Acer Presents a Unique Gaming Experience at GDC

Acer is one of the most respected brands in the PC hardware space, especially among gamers. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they had a massive presence at the 2023 Game Developers Conference. Here they were showcasing the advancements made with the SpatialLabs line of monitors.

During the 2023 Game Developers Conference, I got the chance to get a hands-on demo of several PC game accessories that incorporated Acer’s SpatialLabs. I got to learn more about how they bring your favorite games into the realm of 3D while being an alternative to the VR experience.

Demoing the Acer SpatialLabs

During my visit to the Acer SpatialLabs booth, I got to enjoy an demo the SpatialLabs TrueGame and the Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition. Not only did I get to learn a lot about them (thanks to the amazing Acer team) but I also got to play some great games.

SpatialLabs TrueGame is a monitor that visually enhances the world of the game. It allows for the creation of a more detailed 3D environment in tune with the player’s vision. This is made possible using two built-in cameras that are positioned to be focused on the player’s eyes. It feeds that data into the system to allow for the creation of the 3D world based on where the player is looking.

During my hands-on demo, I got to experience the power of the SpatialLabs TrueGame by playing Bright Memory: Infinite.  If you remember my review of the game, I described it as a fast-paced shooter that was clearly influenced by Crysis. The game itself was already visually impressive but the SpatialLabs TrueGame took it to new heights. It really created an immersive world.

Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition is what happens when the SpatialLabs TrueGame is incorporated into their gaming laptop. It has a 15.6-inch UHD (3840 x 2160 in 2D mode / 1920 x 2160 in 3D mode) display. It’s powered with a 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900H CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 3080 Laptop GPU. It has a 32GB dual channel DDR5 SDRAM for memory and a 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD for storage.

I got to experience it with a playthrough of Psychonauts 2. Using the power of the SpatialLabs hardware, it brought the game’s off-beat and colorful world to life. This technology was clearly made for such a game like this (and so much more).

Final Thoughts

Currently, the SpatialLabs software is compatible with 100 games. Acer is planning to expand that number as they work with developers to better integrate the technology into more games. Here is a complete list of games that will work with SpatialLabs TrueGame.
