A first-hand look at playing The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit demo during Steam Next Fest 2025.

Steam Next Fest 2025 was an opportunity for gamers to try out a variety of games coming soon. Among the titles I got to play was one that will take you back to the past – to play the shitty games that suck ass. The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit was among the many games available to demo during the event.
The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit is a retro-style game based on the hit YouTube series. Players will take on the role of James “the Nerd” Rolfe as he battles his way through a series of levels. It should be noted that this coverage of the demo is a preview and should not be considered a review. I plan to publish a full review once the game officially launches.

The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit is a side-scrolling action platformer based on the hit YouTube series. Players take on the role of James “The Nerd” Rolfe, armed with an NES Zapper and a Power Glove. Players will battle through levels inspired by classic NES titles, facing foes that match the stage’s theme and drawing inspiration from retro games.
The demo featured two stages, the Graves ‘n Groans and Soda Factory. Based on the setup of the classic Mega Man games, the Nerd will battle through each of these stages before confronting the final boss. However, it will not be easy as each stage has its own set of traps, foes, and mini-bosses.

The demo opens with an 8-bit rendition of The Angry Video Game Nerd Theme Song. Players can choose between the Graves ‘n Groans or Soda Factory level to start. All the while, the Nerd glares with his signature angry expression.
Graves ‘n Groans has the Nerd battling through a haunted graveyard filled with dangers. Players will face severed hands, Frankenstein-like foes, and ghosts. The stage is also packed with traps and hidden gems to discover. It all culminates in a showdown against the Devil.
Soda Factory is a multi-path stage set in a factory overrun with killer robots. Inspired by the climax of The Terminator, the Nerd must fight his way through while navigating multiple routes. The stage culminates in a final showdown against Speziman.

First, let’s get the obvious out of the way—this is not an LJN-quality game. The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit embraces a retro-inspired aesthetic with its graphics, gameplay, and soundtrack. However, its quality-of-life features and mechanics are on par with modern games. Controls are responsive, ensuring that jumps feel precise and blasting foes never feels frustrating. However, you will be screaming “ASS!” during the boss fights.
The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit demo was one of many games we got to play during Steam Next Fest. The full game is set to launch sometime in 2025 for the NES. It will also launch on modern consoles and the PC.
