Set 15 years after a cataclysmic event, Neon Genesis Evangelion follows Shinji Ikari, who is recruited by his estranged father to pilot an Evangelion in humanity’s desperate battle against beings known as Angels. The series has been widely praised for deconstructing the mecha genre while exploring complex religious symbolism and profound themes of individuality, freedom, and personal choice.

The original series aired from 1995 to 1996 and concluded with the film The End of Evangelion. It was later reimagined through the Rebuild of Evangelion saga, which began in 2007. Throughout 2026, it will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. To have an idea of the series, check out my review of the Netflix dubbed version of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
