A Weekend to Relive the Arcade Days

Remember when you would spend an entire day at the arcade with a few good friends? For those of us who had such a youth, California Extreme 2025 was an emotional reunion. It was another weekend to replay the games that defined our youth while taking a trip back in time.

California Extreme 2025 brought together retro gamers along with arcade fans for a nostalgic weekend. Guests could enjoy their favorite games and also purchase any of the arcade cabinets on the floor, if they were for sale. For me and my friends, it was all about spending the weekend playing arcade games like in the good old days.

A Nostalgic Arcade

My weekend at California Extreme 2025 was all about reconnecting with some of my favorite arcade games. It was a chance to play some classics that launched successful franchises or paved the way for others to follow. Thus, it makes sense to talk about the arcade games I got to play during the weekend.

The first game I sought after was Crazy Taxi, a title I played at various arcades and on the PlayStation 2. It had been years since my last session, so I was thrilled to see it featured at California Extreme 2025. I chose Axel for my playthrough, which began with two stops at the cable car station, followed by a drop-off at Tower Records. From there, I made a quick delivery to KFC and ended with a final drop-off at the park just before time ran out.

Silent Scope has been one of my favorite arcade series, while the third entry has been a regular at California Extreme. Silent Scope EX was the third game in the series and puts players in the role of a special forces sniper who is deployed to resolve a variety of terrorist situations. The game featured at the event was the original arcade cabinet with the sniper rifle. Since I’ve been playing this series for a long time, I was a natural pro. I was once again able to complete the entire game with ease.

The House of the Dead 2 was one of my go to games, so it was great to see it at California Extreme. Unfortunately, the version on display was a bit janky and poorly calibrated, as the shots didn’t land where I aimed. Also, not making it easy is the guncon was unresponsive at times. It was a bit disappointing, but I’m not too upset since the remake is set to release later this summer.

One unique game that caught my attention, despite not being part of my childhood, was Black Emperor. This motorcycle game challenges players to ride across an endless desert, with the goal of surviving as long as possible. It took me a little time to figure out what to do, but once I got the hang of it, I managed to cover a decent distance before it was game over.

Playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as part of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is fun, but there’s something special about experiencing the original arcade version. While not all characters were unlocked, I was able to put together a solid team with Cable, Wolverine, and Guile. I faced off against an opponent using Juggernaut, Hayato, and Morrigan. It was an intense match, but I managed to come out on top, with just a little HP left on my last surviving character.

Area 51 was back and I had to replay this cornerstone of my arcade experience. Players assume the role of a Special Tactical Advanced Alien Response (S.T.A.A.R.) operative, tasked with stopping an alien takeover of the infamous facility. I jumped into the action by joining another player midway through the Hangar stage. Together, we fought our way through relentless waves of enemies and pushed forward until we finally destroyed the mothership in the game’s climactic finale.

See You Next Year

California Extreme has always been an opportunity to relive my childhood, and the 2025 event was no different. It is a lesson on the history of video games and a chance to play titles I missed out on. That’s why it’s the perfect weekend for gamers of all generations to gather and have fun, whether they were raised in arcades or are fascinated by gaming history.
