In a surprise for classic horror fans, Capcom has surprised dropped the original Resident Evil series on Steam.
The PC versions of Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are now available for purchase on Steam. While the remakes and new games have been available for years, this marks the first time the original titles have become available on the Steam Store. Before, the PC versions of the games were only available on the GOG Store. To commemorate the launch, both games are also 50% off until April 15th.
The original Resident Evil launched on the PlayStation in 1996 and helped define the survival horror genre. It was later ported to PC and Sega Saturn. The game received a remake for the GameCube in 2002, that was remastered for modern consoles and the PC in 2015.
Resident Evil 2 was the second entry in the horror series and is widely regarded as one of its defining games, as well as one of the greatest horror titles ever made. It first launched in 1998 for the PlayStation before being ported to PC, Nintendo 64, and Sega Dreamcast. The game later received a remake in 2019, helping spark a remake trend that has helped define this generation.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was the last main entry in the series to be released for the PlayStation and acts as both a prequel and a sequel to the second game. Unlike its predecessors, this was a radical departure as it introduced new mechanics that would be staples of the series. It would later be ported to the PC, Nintendo GameCube, and Dreamcast.
