As the season of fear is here, let’s begin Gamers Nightmare by looking back at The House of the Dead 2.

As the season of fear is here, I want to once again start by looking back at when the arcade was a major part of the gamer community, specifically when it also had its share of horror classics that would inspire the genre overall. That is why I’m going to start with The House of the Dead 2.
Released for the arcade back in 1998, The House of the Dead 2 was a horror-themed light gun shooter that took gamers on a terrifying adventure. A follow-up to the hit arcade game, it featured the same setup but in a different setting. Gamers Nightmare will start the 2024 season of fear by looking back at The House of the Dead 2.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, The House of the Dead 2 was a staple of arcades. I often saw it at Tilt Arcade in Cupertino’s Valco Mall or stumbled upon it in nearly every arcade I visited. I would spend hours blasting away zombies, often teaming up with anyone willing to join me. It was a game I enjoyed so much that I even picked up a copy of the PC version that I play from time to time.
The story closely mirrors that of its predecessor, shot waves of zombies and stop the super weapon. AMS agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart are dispatched to locate Agent G. Upon their arrival, they find the city overrun by the undead, with Agent G wounded. Armed with the information provided and a gun in hand, they must fight their way to the heart of the city. After battling waves of zombies and abominations, they uncover that Caleb Goldman, the financial backer of Dr. Curien, is behind the chaos. Worse still, he plans to unleash the Emperor upon the world.
Fighting the undead is not easy, particularly when torrents of blood and gore painted the screen. The journey was far from linear; rescuing civlians not only provids some health but also unlocks shortcuts throughout the stage. Failing to save one of them led to navigating a more treacherous route. Each stage culminated in a formidable boss battle that pushed a player’s skills to their limits.

The House of the Dead 2 was a game hard to miss at the arcade. From the artwork that decorated the cabinet to the gory intro, it was going to get your attention. Plus you could not forget how it would proclaim “THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2” to all who passed. As with the previous game; it was highly praised by critics while becoming one of the highest-grossing arcade titles of 1998. It would go on to be a launch title for the SEGA Dreamcast followed by a PC launch in 2001.
The House of the Dead shares a similar legacy with Resident Evil. Both franchises began with iconic horror games, but their sequels gained greater popularity. Just as Resident Evil 2 is often hailed as the best in its series, The House of the Dead 2 holds that distinction for its own. For good reason, both titles took a familiar setup and improved upon it, while raising the stakes for players.

The House of the Dead 2 is an arcade classic that improved upon a successful horror game. It’s also a reminder that horror games were not limited to just consoles and the PC. At a time when home technology was limited, the arcade could create an unforgettable terror. While those days are long gone, its legacy will never be forgotten thanks to classics like The House of the Dead 2.
Hopefully we could experience a remake sometime in the future.
