The 19th year anniversary of the release of 007 GoldenEye for the N64 is two weeks away but interest in a fan made remake has already sparked among gamers following its first update in three years.

Interest in 007 GoldenEye Source has sparked all across social media following its first major update since 2013. It’s currently one of the top trending topics on Facebook and Twitter as many news outlets have been reporting on the update.

Ben Reily was one such fan who stated on Facebook,

I loved Goldeneye and GE: Source and this version looks just as fun as the other versions.

Meanwhile another fan, Morgan Laurent , posted on Twitter,

#Nostalgy #Geek : Best 007 GoldenEye remake ever… Wow !

007 GoldenEye Source is an unofficial HD remake of the games multiplayer built using the Source Engine. The mod features 25 maps that have been recreated maps, 10 different multiplayer modes, and redesigned versions of all original weapons. Despite several trailier recreating key moments, there is no single player component to the mod.

The project started as a mod for Half-Life in the early 2000’s before switching over to the Source Engine. The completed mod was released in 2010 and it requires Half-Life 2 to function.

007 GoldenEye Source has become a popular mod  following a failed attempt at releasing an official HD remake of the classic game. The biggest obstacle has been Nintendo (which published the game), Rare (which developed the game and is owned by Microsoft), and Activsion (which currently holds the rights to make James Bond games) have been unable to come to an agreement.

007 GoldenEye was released for the N64 on August 27, 1997 and its been hailed as one of the greatest shooters of all time. It was followed by a spiritual successor, Perfect Dark, while a remake set in the Danial Craig universe was released in 2010.

  1. I always kicked ass and I always had someone play Oddjob just for a challenge. Gotta dlwnload this mod because it looks awesome!

  2. All I know is that if Nintendo, or Rare, or anyone else ever tries to put a C&D takedown notice on this, they better fire back with “you guys couldn’t get your sh!+ together long enough to sort out the rights and release a downloadable version on someone’s console, but you’ll assert your rights now?”.
